21 DAYS OF PRAYER IS FOR YOU

Day 21 - Pick Up Your Sword

"Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Ephesians 6:17

Devotion:

A soldier would used the sword as both a defensive and offensive weapon.  It was used to protect or attack.  Like a tool or an instrument, a carpenter or musician must learn from someone skilled on how it works and then continue to practice to learn how to use it well.  To use the sword properly and for the best protection, a soldier would receive training and continuously train with it.

The sword used by the Roman soldier was sharpened on each side with a sharp end making it able to pierce or penetrate and cut in every way it was moved.  In Hebrews 4:12 God's Word is referred to as a sword, "For the word of God is alive and powerful.  It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.  It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires".  The sword of the Spirit, the "Logos", the Word of God pierces, it penetrates the spiritual heart and lays open the very innermost thoughts and motives of whoever it touches.  God's Word changes and transforms lives.  God's Word is timeless, it is truth, it bears witness about Him and it is unchanging.

Christian soldiers need training on how to properly use the Sword of the Spirit.  When we know how to handle His Word it will be both an effective defense and an offensive weapon against the enemy.  "We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.  We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God.  We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

The Word of God will make us strong and able to withstand the attacks of the enemy.  The more we know and understand the Word, God reveals Himself through His Word.  The more we use the sword of the Spirit the more effective we will be to stand against the devil, the enemy of our souls.

"A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.  For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against might powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.  Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.  Then after the battle you will be standing firm.  Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God's righteousness.  For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.  In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.  Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.  Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere."  Ephesians 6:10-18

Christian soldier, you are strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.  Put on the whole armor of God everyday, take up the sword of the Spirit, pray and stand firm!

Prayer:

Lord, let us take up the sword of the Spirit today.  When the enemy comes at us to try and twist the scriptures or cause doubt, remind me what your Word truly says.  As we study your Word, reveal to us the meaning of it and how to apply it to our lives.  Thank you that we are strong in You and in Your mighty power.  Thank you that you have given us the whole armor to clothe ourselves in so that we are prepared and able to stand firm against the devil.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Fast:

Today, fast your choice.

PRAYER & FASTING

During the January season of 21 Days of Prayer, we encourage fasting as a spiritual next step that can bring clarity and revelation into your life. You can also choose to fast at other times of the year as you seek God.
